The Best Time of Year to Visit Biscayne National Park
"When's the best time to come?" I hear that question almost every week. The honest answer: there's no bad time to be out on Biscayne Bay. But winter and summer feel like two different parks, and knowing what each season brings will help you pick the right trip.
Here's how I'd break it down after years of running charters out of Homestead.
Winter: Dry, Comfortable and Busy
From roughly December through April, South Florida is in its dry season, and it's easy to see why so many people visit. The air is less humid, the days are comfortable, and you can spend hours in the sun without feeling like you're melting.
A few things to know about winter on the water:
Cold fronts bring wind. Every so often a front pushes through and the wind picks up for a day or two. It can make the bay choppier. I keep a close eye on the forecast and will always talk with you if conditions change.
The water is cooler. It's still swimmable for plenty of people, but it isn't the bathwater it is in summer. Some guests jump right in, and others are happy to wade at the sandbar and enjoy the view.
It's popular. Winter is high season, so weekends can book up early and spots like the Boca Chita Key harbor can fill up. Weekdays are a great choice if your schedule allows.
Bring a light layer. A breezy ride back across the bay can feel chilly on a cool day, especially late in the afternoon.
Summer: Warm Water and Calm Mornings
From about May through October, it's hot, humid and green, and the water is at its warmest. If snorkeling and floating are your thing, summer is hard to beat.
What to expect in summer:
Warm water. This is prime time for swimming, snorkeling and lounging on a floating mat.
Mornings are often calm. Some of the glassiest, clearest days I see all year happen on summer mornings.
Afternoon thunderstorms. They're a normal part of summer in Miami. They usually build later in the day and often pass quickly, but safety always comes first. If lightning is nearby, we head for shelter or come back in.
Hurricane season. It officially runs June 1 to November 30. Most days are perfectly fine, and I watch the forecasts closely. If weather makes a trip unsafe, we'll work with you on a new date.
Fewer crowds. Summer weekdays especially can feel like you have the park to yourself.
Catching a Sunset on the Water
There's nothing quite like watching the sun go down over the bay from the deck of a boat. Here's how to plan for it, depending on the season.
In winter, the sun sets earlier, so you've got more options. Our 4-hour charter starting at 2 PM is a great way to catch sunset on the water. A 6 or 8-hour charter also gives you plenty of time to enjoy the park and stay out for sunset.
In summer, with later sunsets in the summer months, a sunset is best paired with a 6 or 8-hour charter. That gives you a full day of exploring, swimming and relaxing, with the sunset as the grand finale.
When you book, just tell me you want a sunset, and I'll plan the timing around it for your date.
So, Which Season Is Best?
It really depends on what you're after:
Come in winter if you want comfortable temperatures, low humidity and easy sightseeing, like the Boca Chita Key lighthouse, Stiltsville and the Miami skyline.
Come in summer if you want warm water for snorkeling and swimming, calm mornings and a quieter park.
Either way, Biscayne National Park is about 95% water, so the best way to see it is from a boat.
